Tanzanian Peaberry coffee comes from the high-altitude areas of Tanzania, especially around Mount Kilimanjaro, where the climate and volcanic soil create ideal conditions for Arabica coffee. While not as famous as its East African neighbors like Ethiopia and Kenya, Tanzania has a long history of coffee cultivation, gaining international recognition over the last few decades. The Haya tribe was the first to grow coffee in the 16th century, initially using a Robusta variety called amwani, which was prepared in a unique way and used as currency and in rituals. Coffee became a symbol of wealth, controlled by the king. In the late 19th century, under German colonial rule, coffee was turned into a cash crop, and British rule after World War I further developed coffee production. By the 1990s, Tanzanian coffee gained global acclaim, and today it is the country's largest export crop. Peaberries, which are single round beans that develop when a coffee cherry only fertilizes one bean, are denser than regular beans and offer a smoother brewing experience. They require careful hand-sorting, which makes them pricier. Tanzanian Peaberry coffee is known for its complexity, featuring bright acidity, medium body, and flavors of citrus, blackberry, tea, and pipe tobacco. It is grown primarily by smallholders, particularly from estates in southern and northern Tanzania, including Lunji, Utengule, Kanji Lanji, Mondul, Burka, Ngila, and Lyamungu, each known for its unique coffee characteristics.
